I know for a fact there used to be a steam shed at Plaistow, but what the shed number was, I have no idea. I went to see my Grandmother (Dad's Mum) in hospital years before she passed and she once said: "Pop's going over the bridge to get the car.". When we asked her what bridge, she replied "Plaistow and near the train shed where he works.", but our Grandfather had never learnt to drive, let alone own a car or even work at Plaistow shed to our knowledge. In fact he worked at Stratford depot and as a wheel tapper.

Many years later, I learnt that the 60's Pop Star Joe Brown (& The Bruvvers) once worked from Plaistow as a Fireman on the LT&SR, but gave it up to become a Pop star and when I saw and spoke to him back in the 1990's, I asked him if it was correct and he confirmed it. Joe later went on to have a Bungalow built in West Horndon, but after it was completed, changed his mind and had it sold. It is still there and next to the A127 in West Horndon.

Plaistow was the main shed on the LT&S, the code being "33A". The other two main sheds were "33B - Tilbury" and "33C - Shoeburyness". There was also a small shed at Upminster, which was used by the 580XX locos that ran on the Upminster to Romford shuttle service.

I remember seeing Joe Brown at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet many years ago, and he was saying then that his first job was at Plaistow depot.

Hi Patrick and welcome to the forum. Sorry I wasn't around to greet you earlier, but recently moved and still awaiting my Internet to be put on.

I too met Joe Brown and a few years ago in Kings Lynn. I spoke to him about Plaistow and being on the railways. Had he not snapped my head off for something else, I would have spoken longer with him. I chose to bite my tongue and walk away.
