The last but one 'new' station added to the line is Basildon.
I stand to be corrected, but I always thought the signboard and the site of the then proposed station back in the 1960's was originally the other side of the Kingswood Bridge as I call it. I don't know the exact year it finally opened, but I do strongly believe it was a 'First' so to speak. By this I mean it was and to my knowledge, the First ever station to be built away from the line, then rolled into place from the South side of the line.
A class 357 rolls into Basildon shortly after some IDIOT came out this side, jumped down on the tracks and crossed the line, possibly showing off in front of the young ladies there on 18th November 2006, but DID it get caught on the station CCTV I wonder?

Hi all!
My names Sam, I'm 20 from Basildon. So I thought I'd post here first! I rarely take photo's of the LT&SR owing to the staff. (Yes, the Revenue Manager at Basildon decided to take my name and address and booted me out of the station for attempting to photograph ''Private Property''. )
Some of you may know my road: Markhams Chase. A short 20 minute walk to the station.
I'm a huge rail fan soon to be working for First Great Western in Bristol. My enthusiasm in the LT&SR began just last year. Being so young I don't remember the steam days and not really using trains as a child, I hardly remember the 310's/312's/317's, but I cant go denying a knowing of the existance of the 357's. My pet is, naturally, 357028 ''London Tilbury & Southend Railway 1854 - 2004''. I've cleared the whole class for sighting besides 043. Havne't seen it since it's run in at East Ham depot.
Anyway, back on form. Yes, I have a few books about the route and I just wish that I could have been around during those steam days. I adore the 'Tilbury Tanks'. (I believe Nu-Cast produce a kit for the class in model form. I'm going to obtain one and run it full time!) I can only relieve the steam days via. the books & memories of the guys here.
Thanks for a great forum, dedicated to one of the best lines in the UK!
Sam. |

Another "jobsworth" eh! What you want to do is print off a copy of the "Guide for Enthusiasts" from the British Transport Police site http://www.btp.police.uk/railenthusiasts.html or the National Rail site http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/pas...idelines_for_rail_enthusiasts.htm & keep it with you when you go out.
Both say (near enough) the same thing (personally I have a copy of the BTP one), but should be enough to kepp the "basket" quiet. _________________ Steve B.

Hello Sam and welcome to the forum. I started this up because of being born close to Laindon Station when steam was still in operation. The actress, the Late Joan Sims was actually born at Laindon Station, with her father being Station Master at the time. I was a pupil at Markhams (Now Janet Duke) Chase and Laindon High Road Schools, having lived in Tyler Avenue and Compton Walk, before moving to Norfolk many years ago. I still pay visits to Laindon and was there a few weeks back and have the intention to be again possibly next week and at the top of your road.
Back to the forum, I will always know the line as LT&SR. Like Steve has advised, download a guide and then carry it at all times. If possible, try getting some pictures from roads, fields, bridges, etc. and Good Luck. By the way, I had similar problem at Dagenham Dock not too long ago and AFTER I had sought permission. _________________ Once the misery line, but now passed on to another.

Thanks guys, and Thanks Steve for those links.
I used to go to Janet Duke, although I went to St. Nicholas secondary, now known as the James Hornsby High School, as I'm sure you will very much know. I didn't know Joan Sims was born in Laindon, and it's interesting to know that her father was Satation Master there!
Again, thanks for the welcome.

Hi Sam
See www.basildon.com/history/laindon/laindon.html and enjoy if not already seen. I have an article on there and contributed to a book published in November 2006 titled 'Early Memories of Basildon.' _________________ Once the misery line, but now passed on to another.

I have seen the site and been trhough it a few times. Is it anyone on here that runs it? The picture below features my dad! The guy in the outrageous hat hanging from the sign is him. His mate Steve Ives is on the left.

I have finally found out that Basildon railway station opened where it is, on Monday 25th November 1974, following a campaign that originally began back in the 1950s. Even though there were initial concerns that British Rail might close either Laindon or Pitsea after this opening, it has proved unfounded.
I was also correct in my saying the original proposed site was further east and at the junction of Clay Hill Road and Southernhay, which at one time did have a signboard that was even erected there, then removed in 1963 when the original plans fell into some doubt.
