Pictured below is a Standard 2-6-4T tank locomotive, the last type to be used on this line before the EMU's started.
This picture was of 80080 and taken at Sleaford in Lincolnshire, during a Steam Special trip it was hauling. _________________ Once the misery line, but now passed on to another.

Pictured below is 4-4-2 Tilbury Tank number 2136, taken at Plaistow shed on 12th July 1924, still displaying Southend as its destination on the tender.
I had tremendous pleasure last year to stand on the footplate of the only preserved Tilbury Tank in existence and currently at Bressingham Gardens near Diss in Norfolk. If ever I won enough on the lottery, I would willingly pay to have this loco restored to working order again. _________________ Once the misery line, but now passed on to another.

A few years ago I took a trip to Bressingham museum and stood on the footplate of no 80 Thundersley, before it was restored to its original colour, a few years after we went back and saw the restored colour, fantastic.

I have learnt today that an original LT&SR 2-6-4 Stanier 80072, is in Preservation on the Llangollen Railway. To think I was there in August 2005, but never saw it? I'm gutted to say the least. At least shares are available, but that is a long way to go to see it. _________________ Once the misery line, but now passed on to another.

The steam locos, specifically tank engines, numbered in the 80000 (through to the 84000s) series were designed under British Railways, by (I believe) R.A. Riddles - although some Stanier influences can be detected. Ditto, in respect of tender locos, for 70xxx to 79xxx, and indeed 90000 to 90250.
A little research would confirm this, but I believe that, of the members of this particular class (4MT, number range 80000 to 801 something something) which worked regularly on the LT&S (clearly not ALL of the class did!), SEVERAL made it into preservation. Anecdotally I think these include 80179 and 80080, but I'm not on firm ground here.

I actually bought the shirt when I was last on the Steam on the LT&SR in May 1997. I would like to have been on the few trips they've done on there since, but never had the money at the time. Further to the talk of BR standard 2-6-4Tanks in preservation, in particular "supersonicade" quest to see these locos, Steam Railway magazine in May 2003 lists all the 800 types that have survived. Not sure how we stand for copyright but they are:-

Due to my recent move, I am yet to rebuild my layout, but when I do the 'OO' gauge, I intend getting one by Bachmann. A club member has one and knows I Love them, so wont bring it in very often and I joke that I think it is to annoy me. Actually, we run trains once a month in order to have a break from doing the scenics. When we are on a club night and running, I will get one and put on there.
I have tried unsuccessfully to get a ready-built 'Tilbury Tank' so far. There are some kits, but I can't afford them, let alone build one.
