Years ago, I was the first Chairman of the LT&SR Society and as a group, we tried to persuade them to run 'Steam Specials' again down there, but at first we got fobbed off with the excuse about the OHL. I then reminded them that steam had been running under them from Liverpool Street for years with no effect. The excuse was then changed to 'different type of wire used' to avoid running them, but I was determined not to be beaten. Eventually, I resigned from the Society due to a rumour I had heard. It was later confirmed as untrue. Most unfortunately, the Society has since stopped meeting to my knowledge.

On 2nd May 1999, I was on the first steam train from Fenchurch Street through to Shoeburyness. I couldn't believe it had finally paid off and have this trip actually on video because I filmed parts of it. I even bought a polo-shirt on the train, but it cost me £27 and still wear it. It was the most I have ever paid for a polo-shirt. It was out behind 80080 and returned behind 80098. Below is a picture of 80080, but taken at Sleaford in Lincolnshire while working another special.

The day I saw this, I had driven almost 60 miles to see it and got a bit emotional upon it coming into sight, but it was worth it.

I remember that day well. At the time I was a Depot Driver at Shoeburyness and had the pleasure of pulling some points for it in the yard Smile I also got a tour of the cab.

The Guard on that trip was conducted by an East Ham guard (he was the last steam guard on the company.) He now works on barking platform from time to time.
