I have just read that an MP has announced today that there should be a station built on the Island with a spur off to Pitsea. What an idea, except if the Island should ever have a repeat of 1953 and the horrendous floods? It was bad enough with Benfleet or Chalkwell station being flooded and the water up to near platform level from what I recall. I saw the pictures of it in a daily newspaper back then.
Below is the extract from the Basildon Echo announcing the plans for the station:
The possibility of a railway station for Canvey has been discussed in Parliament. Castle Point MP Bob Spink believes a rail link to the island is vital to make life easier for residents who commute to work and would improve the island's economy. He raised the issue in the House of Commons. Addressing the House, he said: "We should make small, but strategic additions to the main lines. We should build spur lines and loops to existing tracks, and new stations to serve large communities. Many communities are without stations, but their people use the rail service. Canvey has 44,000 people, and 3,000 of them have to travel off the island to get on a train to travel to London to work each day. Only 600 people a day use the terminal at Shoeburyness on the same line, so we could afford a new station on Canvey Island, with a spur line linking it to Pitsea down Canvey Way."
Mr Spink said he believed the measures would be "quite cheap" and would help to regenerate Canvey. Commuters from Canvey must travel to Benfleet to get to either London or Southend every morning for work. _________________ Once the misery line, but now passed on to another.
