Pictured below is one of the 312's that once served this line, seen leaving Leigh-on-Sea. These units were transferred from the West Anglia Great Northern route, having been used between Cambridge and Liverpool Street.

This one was heading for Shoeburyness. I can remember getting a steam hauled train from Laindon to Leigh, getting off there and walking through to Southend on a Sunday morning as a child.

See www.bramleyline.org.uk where one day we just might see an Ex-LT&SR Standard 4 steaming along as a Guest loco.

I'm 99% certain that is a 312 not a 310.
Its the window frames that give it away. Cool

I will take your word on that as I never could tell the difference. Rolling Eyes Embarassed

There were a couple of differences.

1) The 310's had a single "Guard" door as well as the double "Goods" doors.

2) At the Front, the 310's had a 2 section windscreen, whilst the 312's had 3 sections.

Most of our 310s also had plates covering the tops of the main res & brake pipes.

310s have the horns on the drivers side, and the DSD isolator on the 2nd mans side. If I remember correctly 312s had Yaw bars on the bogies, 310s did not.

That pic looks like a 312 to me. Do you have a higher res version?

Yes it is a 312 as it has a 3 piece windscreen.

Ah right, didn't know that, although the windscreen is 1 way of telling the difference between Class 86 & 87 locos.

Actually I have tried to zoom in on the powercar and, from what I can make out, it looks like a 310 as it appears there is a single door close to the edge of the bodywork (although it may be just my eyes).

We'd be guessing with such a low res picture. I miss both 310 and 312s. They were lovely to drive.

Did cab them both thanks to a couple of friends. The only "modern" class I didn't cab was the 302's.
